Light and Shadow

Still Life No. 1
Charcoal on Paper
Fall 2005

Before taking Drawing I during my Sophomore Fall Semester, I had only ever drawn with pencil and ink. So, drawing in charcoal was a new thing for me. I had a lot of fun with it, though. Here was my first attempt at a finished charcoal drawing. For this drawing, I positioned these objects (a small statue, fire lamp, and arm sculpture against a blanket backdrop. The images being drawn here were all black and white, so it was relatively easy to depict light, shadow and shading. What was difficult was drawing the design around the base of the lamp. I had to use a charcoal pencil for that.
